There’s a saying in country music, “it’s all about the song,” and the brilliance of that statement can never be understated. Country music is one of very few genres of music that the song is really all that matters. Country music fans were raised by the best: Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, I mean people that could literally create magic when their pen hit paper. It’s a legacy that makes country music fans the greatest in the world. Country fans aren’t fooled by a cool beat or a catchy hook, they know what a great song is and that’s what they expect to hear. And that ladies and gentleman is what makes finding or writing the perfect country song such a challenge.
When we had our first meeting about songs, my managers looked at me and said, “ok we’re going to cut three songs, therefore you should listen to at least 5,000 songs over the next few months.” I literally laughed out loud! I honestly never thought that was even possible! I would have to be listening to songs 24 hours a day for the next three months to hit their target! Little did I know, they were 100% right, I ended up listening to over 5,000 songs to record only three!
We found the first song almost immediately, my producers, New Voice Entertainment, sent it over two days after our first meeting! I was so pumped……I thought 5,000 songs, my managers must be crazy!! Then we went stagnate for quite some time! In fact, we didn’t find the second song for another SEVEN months! Remember earlier when I mentioned the challenge part? Oh yeah, this is when I was feeling it! On top of listening to hundreds of songs a day, I was also writing songs that were constantly getting rejected, but I was absolutely determined to get just the right songs and so were New Voice!
It was the end of March and we were schedule to head into the studio the day after Easter, so at this point I was sweating bullets! We had two songs in place, but that third song was proving to be quite elusive. It was early in the morning when I got a call from my manager saying he was emailing me some songs, New Voice has just given him. It was magic……the second I heard the song, I knew it was the perfect song, not only for the mix, but quite possibly the best song of the bunch! Less than one week away from recording and we finally found the missing piece of the puzzle!
When I took my first meeting with New Voice Entertainment, I would have never guessed it would take 11 months to find our songs! I had no way of knowing that finding the perfect three songs could take almost a year. In fact, I would have bet it could never have taken longer than six months. Write this moment down, because I was………WRONG!!!
