In the never ending effort to keep me interested in working out and staying healthy, I constantly have to come up with new ideas and workouts. I’m kind of like a three year old that gets easily bored! Well, I decided after doing the same workout for a long time, I had to add something new to the mix. I racked my brain for a while, talking to friends and strangers too, about their workout plans. With my days getting crazier and crazier my times for workouts were decreasing, so I knew I needed the best, “bang for my buck,” I could get it.
I got talked into trying Bikram Hot Yoga! I have to say I went into the experience pretty clueless. I had only ever taken one yoga class in my life, and it was two years ago. I didn’t enjoy it that much, and it wasn’t Bikram Yoga either, so I knew I was going to be a little out of my league……….and who am I kidding….A LOT out of my league.
Well, I have to say my first class was a disaster! Now when they say, “Bikram Hot Yoga,” that in no way explains the HOT part. I mean, I’ve felt heat before, but let me assure you there are no adjectives strong enough to describe this room. Frankly, I would equate it to the pits of hell! It was awful! The teacher of the class told me since it was my first class, my goal should just be to stay in the room for the entire 90 minutes. I was in the room less than two minutes, and I had seriously thought about leaving after the first five seconds, so I knew 90 minutes would not be possible, but I said ok and off we went!
Now, we’ve all been in some not pleasant situations in our lives. Situations that make you feel uncomfortable, angry, sad, but are out of your control, so you just deal with it. Well, I just can’t even explain the way I was feeling in this class knowing I had participated in this of my own free will! To spare you the gruesome details of me: questioning my life, wanted to dump my bottle of water over my head, lay down on my mat and not get up until 90 minutes was over, oh yes…..I was a hot mess: I tried to focus the best I could and grit my teeth through a 90 minute torture session.
I was so proud when the 90 minutes was up and I knew I had gotten through the class. I was most definitely having a personal party for myself. But on top of my life party, I was also realizing how truly bad at yoga I was. Well it’s not like I’ve always been the best at things, but I’m certainly not used to being the worst either, so that really stuck with me. What for me was going to be a one and done 90 minute life experience, became a challenge. It was in the magical position of savasana, that it hit me, I have to do this again! I was determined to not be the worst at the next class, so thus began a new workout tradition of Bikram Hot Yoga!
Lots of Love,
